Safe Food Handling Certification Course The York Region Community and Health Services Department offers a food handler certification course, called "PROTON". PROTON, refers to the individual taking positive action towards food safety. It is a certification course that is valid for five years and recognized by all health departments within Ontario. In York Region we strongly recommend that there be a certified food handler per shift plus the manager/owner of the food establishment (restaurant, cafeteria, supermarket, etc). This program is currently mandatory in the regions of Toronto and Hamilton. We offer the courses in English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin speaking) at our office locations. Upon request, we can provide this course to the community at their location. The link to our website is: http://www.york.ca/Services/Public+Health+and+Safety/Food+Safety/PROTON.htm.
